Sleep
apnea is a serious condition, even possibly life-threatening, where
breathing stops numerous times (even hundreds of times) each night.
Sleep apnea affects men and women of all ages. It is less common
for children to be affected. Each time breathing stops, there is
no airflow into or out of the lungs. The apneas can last from 10
seconds to more than 30 seconds.
Much
needed oxygen is prevented from entering the bloodstream. This sleep
disturbance, over time, will cause fatigue, lethargy, and headaches.
A sleep partner often becomes aware of this stop-and-start pattern
which is accompanied by very loud snoring.
There
are three types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea, central
sleep apnea and mixed. The most common obstructive sleep apnea occurs
when the upper airway is blocked by excess tissue.
Excessive
sleepiness during the daytime
Headaches,
especially in the morning
Depression
Loss
of energy
Poor
performance or lack of focus
Restless
sleep
